Lithuania between Constantinople and Rome

In the 13th-15th centuries the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was one of the most important European political powers. Lithuanian dukes ware aware of the importance of the integration of their territory to European political structures that was enabled by the adoption of Christianity. The importance of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania allowed the dukes a free choice between Western and Eastern Christian tradition. The influence and contention of the two strong ideological traditions on this territory found their reflection in eminent period art works that can be seen in the exhibition.
