Lithuanian riding pavis

This kind of shield appears in iconographic sources since the 14th century, at first on seals of Kuyavian and Lithuanian princes who gave it its name. However, this type of rectangular shield with central reinforced rib was also used by members of the Teutonic Order, see e.g. the gravestone of the Order´s knight, Bratianian bailiff Kuno von Liebenstein († 1391). The picture shows a pavis from the 15th century (82 x 42 cm, wood covered with leather, painted order cross) originating from Central Europe or Prussia (Bouzov castle).
